Site Waste Management Plans

10 million tonnes of construction waste is produced every year at a cost of £1.5 billion. Much of this is harmful to the environment and costly to your business. Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) will help you manage waste more effectively, reducing potential harm to the environment.

In England, from 6 April 2008, you must have a SWMP for all new construction projects worth more than £300,000.

If you are in Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales, you do not yet need to have a SWMP. However, following the procedure could help you to reduce the amount of waste you produce and will help you manage your waste more effectively. SWMPs are being promoted as an example of best practice in the construction industry.

A SWMP sets out how resources will be managed and waste controlled at all stages during a construction project.
