Open Windrow Composting

The open windrow composting process commences with green waste material such as grass cuttings, prunings and leaves being shredded, mixed and placed into windrows. The windrows are then turned on a regular basis to improve oxygen content, distribute heat, moisture and regulate temperature.

The final stages of the open windrow composting process involve the compost being screened to remove contaminants such as plastic or metal, and being graded into varying sizes dependant on its end use. Oversized material is also removed and put back to complete the process again.

The overall open windrow composting process takes on average sixteen weeks dependant on the maturity required.

End uses

The compost produced can be applied in a range of end uses, within gardens, on brownfield sites, landscaping and full scale agriculture.

The screening grades the products to between 0mm and 30mm particles which, dependent on grade, can then be used as soil improver, mulch, topsoil constituent, turf dressing, and growing medium.
